Summer Is Finally Here!
The smoggy, dark, wet, and cold days are finally behind us—hopefully for good!
As you’ve probably noticed, the long-awaited holiday celebrating 50 years of Reunification Day is kicking off. This year’s five-day break is the perfect excuse for many to escape Hanoi—whether to breathe in the fresh sea air of the South or tackle mountain treks in the stunning North. After six months under Hanoi’s thick blanket of pollution, we all deserve a high-quality dose of clean air. Some will join the patriotic crowds in Ho Chi Minh City, soaking in the sea of flags and vibrant parades. All eyes are on the South.
But we also understand if you’re not a fan of crowded holiday getaways. This blog is for the Hanoians who are staying in town—choosing to skip the costly travel, dodge the crowds, and simply enjoy the calm breezes (before summer heat hits full swing) during this rare seasonal transition and festive spirit in the capital.
Your Holiday-Itinerary-In-Hanoi, All in a Day:
Morning: Start with a Savory Breakfast
Fuel up for a full day of exploring! Craving local classics like phở or bánh mì? Head to Phở Khôi Hói or Bánh Mì Cô Ba. For something quicker and lighter, grab a hot, steamy bánh bao paired with a cup of sữa đậu (soy milk) at 146 Quán Thánh—a budget-friendly, satisfying combo.
Coffee Breaks, Hanoi Style
These breezy mornings deserve to be savored in one of Hanoi’s many unique cafés. There’s simply nowhere else like Vietnam when it comes to coffee culture.
Want a quiet nook? Try Tranquil, Nương Náu, or Chốn for cozy, hidden corners perfect for sipping cold brew or fruity teas.
Craving cà phê trứng? Head to Loading T, a charming café inside a grand old French building on Chân Cầm Street. Known for both hot and iced versions of egg coffee, Loading T will awaken your senses. The owner, a creative genius, also offers unexpected yet surprisingly delightful drinks—like lime coffee and even lime egg drink. Strange? Maybe. Worth trying? Absolutely.
Midday Strolls with a Patriotic View
Stretch your legs and take in the festive atmosphere by strolling along streets like Nguyễn Quang Bích, Ấu Triệu, or Phan Huy Ích. You’ll be surrounded by waves of Vietnamese flags, adding a vibrant splash of patriotism to your holiday.
Afternoon: A Dose of Culture
After a refreshing nap, continue your day with a visit to one of Hanoi’s iconic museums.
- Hoa Lo Prison Relic: Once used by French colonists for political prisoners, and later by North Vietnam for U.S. POWs during the American War.
- Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum: A must for art lovers, offering a deep dive into Vietnamese fine arts across the ages.
Evening: Wind Down or Turn Up
If you’re near the Old Quarter, consider Tadioto. It’s not just a bar—it’s a cultural experience. The late owner, Nguyen Qui Duc, crafted the space as a mix of Tokyo, Marrakesh, and New York. Enjoy a cocktail, nibble on Japanese bites, and soak in the atmosphere. On select nights, expect live music, art exhibits, or poetry readings by artists from around the globe.
Feeling more energetic? Head to Hanoi Rock City or Polygon Musik. These iconic venues are beloved for their buzzing energy, local indie bands, and visiting alternative rock artists. Perfect spots to dance, jive, and let loose. However, do check if they’re closing for the holiday. If they do, and if you fancy a more “jazzy” alternative, check out Bình Minh Jazz Club or Long Waits jazz club and book your spots in advance!
And last but not least, why not spend this holiday checking out TVO’s upcoming group classes and our learning flashcards with exclusive deals? Perhaps it’s time to elevate your Vietnamese?
No matter how you choose to spend your holiday, Hanoi has something for everyone—especially those staying local. Here’s to a peaceful, inspiring, and smog-free Reunification break in the capital!
